The best hunting trip was a miserable experience at the time even with my new Marlin 336W 270 Magnum. For deer hunting I like a 2-8 power on my deer rifles especially in 458 Win Magnum caliber. The best caliber is for the Marlin 336W is my 270 Magnum.
The best shooting caliber for me is the 458 Win Magnum because it has the best combo of power and speed to make it the most versatile for the different types of game in Maryland. My friend (Gaston) said his favorite caliber is the 458 Win Magnum he got at a NWTF banquet last season. One issue with the 458 Win Magnum barrel is if you put a scope on you lose your irons, the scope rail runs into the rear sights so they have to come off to use a scope.
